On celebs today: Rita Dominic Talks Style

HOW DID YOU DEVELOP YOUR PERSONAL STYLE? It definitely wasn’t conscious or deliberate… I mean there was no strategic plan to develop my style. I wear what I want to wear and what I want depends on how I feel at that certain point in time. I always wear what I’m comfortable in. Sometimes when I’m feeling very feminine, I’ll wear something to express that. If I’m feeling like a Boho chick, then I’ll go really funky. Other times I’ll be avant-garde and try to create something new. And then there are times I want to be unpredictable so I just go for that. So you see, there is no structure to it.

FEW WORDS TO DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE?
Comfort, Comfort, Comfort!  When you’re comfortable in an outfit, your confidence shows.  There are some outfits I will try on and people around me will love it but if I am not comfortable wearing it, I won’t, regardless of how many people like it on me. I like to push the boundaries with fashion but definitely not at the expense of my personal comfort.

WHAT INFLUENCES YOUR CHOICE OF OUTFIT?
Depends on where I’m going to and my state of mind at the time. For example, if it’s a movie premiere, what I wear will depend on if I’m in the movie or not. If I’m in the movie, I will go all out and put in extra effort to look a certain way. After all, it is show business and I am aware that a lot of fans look forward to the premieres. If I’m not in the movie, I’ll look glamorous yet understated. I think it is a ‘don’t’ to upstage the lead actors at a movie premiere (laughing).

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PIECE OF CLOTHING?
I don’t have any, but if you asked about shoes I would have a quick answer.  If I could, I’d work around with only shoes on (laughs).

WHO ARE YOUR FAVOURITE DESIGNERS?
In Nigeria, JD7 has always been my go-to designer.  More recently, I have been wearing pieces from House of Nwocha by Ugonna Omeruo.  My stylist, Ebun Aboderin introduced  me to Phunk Afrique who made the dress I wore to the premiere of my first production THE MEETING.  Moofah has made a couple of pieces that I like very much.
I look forward to wearing pieces by Deola Sagoe, Jewel by Lisa and Bridget Awosika; love their designs.
On the foreign scene, I love Micheal Kors, Stephane Rolland and Roland Mouret. I also like Valentino, Diane Von Furstenberg and Stella McCartney.

DOS AND DONT’S
Do not wear anything you’re uncomfortable in not even for fashion’s sake.  People can see through you when you do. Wear what suits your body type, don’t copy others. When working with a stylist, be sure to incorporate your ideas so you don’t get lost in someone else’s idea of what you should look like.

IF YOU COULD ASK FOR ONE FASHION PIECE AND HAVE IT HANDED TO YOU, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
I love diamonds so it would be a diamond set from Elizabeth Taylor. Some of her pieces were recently auctioned and they are beautiful.

WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT TREND OBSESSION?
The punk hairstyle with the sides of the head shaven; I don’t think I can try it but I really love it.

WHAT WOULD YOU NEVER BE CAUGHT WEARING?
PJs or leggings made in country colours. I see people wearing them and I cringe every time (laughs).

WHAT IS YOUR BEAUTY REGIMEN?
I don’t have a regimen, there are just certain things I do. I go to the spa at least once a month. Depending on how much pressure my body has been under, I could do a hot stone massage. I also do a 15 minute full body steam and then an orange body scrub twice a month. Other times I’ll opt for a 90 minute aromatherapy massage. On a daily basis, I drink a lot of water, and I take off my make-up and wash my face before I go to bed and use the mango body water lotion.
